AI Is Best at Mapping the Trip, Not the Moments

I’m back from Spain, and it was one of the best trips of my life. We packed in more new sights than I can count, but the standout was the Alhambra, the Moorish palace in Granada that is a marvel of architecture. It has been on my bucket list for years, and it did not disappoint.

As I mentioned in the last ERE Weekly, this trip doubled as an experiment in AI trip planning. Big picture, it did fine. We hit the castles and basilicas you would expect on a first visit. The trouble was in the details. Around the edges, it was “often wrong, but never in doubt,” confidently steering us to attractions closed on Mondays and lunch spots that did not open until evening. It is a reminder that AI can set a solid outline, but human judgment still has to close the gaps. Local context, opening hours, holiday quirks, and the simple art of timing matter more than any model admits.

That lesson maps neatly to talent acquisition. AI can help us scan the market, suggest outreach, and surface patterns. But it is not great at the nuances that make or break outcomes. Hiring managers change requirements. Candidates have messy lives. Policies vary by location. The edge cases are where the real work lives, and they are also where trust is built.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Jeff Taylor, Monster’s founder, and his new venture called Boomband. I am excited to share that we will host Jeff for a no-holds-barred session at the ERE Recruiting Innovation Summit with Joel Cheesman from the Chad & Cheese podcast. If you have ever met or heard either of them, you know what to expect. We will dig into lessons from the job board era, what today’s platforms are getting wrong, and what a better future could look like for practitioners who need results, not hype.
